State of decay 3: zombie deer vanish, alpha test looms
Six years after its initial announcement, and after a wave of hype fueled by a now-defunct zombie deer, State of Decay 3 is finally edging closer to public scrutiny. Developer Undead Labs is preparing an alpha test for May, but not before admitting the iconic trailer—the one featuring a deer feasting on a wolf—was essentially a mirage, a pre-rendered concept born long before the game itself truly existed.

The phantom menace of zombie fauna
The admission, made during an interview with Sunny Games, reveals a painful reality for fans who envisioned a world overrun by grotesque, animated wildlife. Head of Undead Labs, Philip Holt, bluntly stated, “No zombie deer.” He elaborated, painting a picture of a project in its infancy: “There really wasn’t a game or a game team when we were working on that trailer. It was so early. There were like four or five people. The game was in a Word document. There was really like the very beginnings of software.” Blur, the studio responsible for the trailer's slick visuals, created a pre-rendered sequence representing a mere concept—an early exploration of what State of Decay 3might become.
But the absence of zombie deer isn't the only shift from the original vision. Fans also eagerly anticipated snow mechanics and camping, features briefly showcased in that same trailer. Whether those elements will survive the game’s evolution remains to be seen, with the alpha test serving as the first real glimpse into the current state of development.
Undead Labs’ focus sharpened on State of Decay 3 in September 2024, coinciding with the cessation of updates for State of Decay 2, a title that received nearly 40 content updates over six years. The developer’s collaboration with Obsidian—the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas, Grounded, and Avowed—on a “shared world feature” promises a more flexible online co-op experience, leveraging Obsidian’s shared save technology already proven in Grounded. Microsoft hinted at a world “owned by multiple players,” signaling a significant departure from the series’ previous structure.
However, the road hasn’t been without its bumps. Undead Labs has faced allegations of a toxic workplace environment and a lack of clear direction, casting a shadow over the project’s progress. While the alpha test offers a glimmer of hope, the game's ultimate success hinges on delivering a compelling experience that transcends the initial, misleading promise of zombie wildlife. The question now isn't just if State of Decay 3 will arrive, but whether it can recapture the imagination it initially sparked, even without its undead fauna.
