Shailene Woodley, known for her roles in Divergent and Big Little Lies, recently opened up about her experience being cast and then cut from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Woodley was initially thrilled to play Mary Jane Watson, her childhood favorite character, opposite Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man. She filmed several scenes with Garfield, but a year later, she was informed that her character would not be included in the final movie.

In a conversation with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation's Conversations (via The Hollywood Reporter), Woodley explained, "I was cast as Mary Jane for Spider-Man, which was my dream. Oh my god, Spider-Man's my favorite superhero; Mary Jane was my favorite character growing up. So, when I got it, I was like, 'This is so exciting!' We filmed like three scenes together, me and Andrew Garfield. And then, like a year later, they were like, 'So, you're not in the movie anymore.'"

Woodley recalled being told that the filmmakers wanted to wait for the storyline between Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy and Garfield's Spider-Man to unfold before introducing Mary Jane. However, this plan never materialized, as The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ended with Gwen's death. Director Marc Webb and producer Matt Tolmach later explained that they had taken on too much with the "superhero opera" and couldn't effectively integrate Woodley's character.

Despite the disappointment, Woodley remains open to revisiting the role in the future. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures and Marvel have moved on to a new Spider-Man franchise starring Tom Holland and Zendaya as MJ. Andrew Garfield has also reprised his Spider-Man role in the MCU's Spider-Man: No Way Home, and expressed interest in making The Amazing Spider-Man 3.
