Tomb raider remastered update dooms fans with quality issues
Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered players are voicing outrage over the latest patch and accompanying cosmetic outfits, decrying a significant drop in quality shortly after its release.
Buggy outfits and broken gameplay plague new update
The free update, which introduced a challenge mode and collectible outfits, has been met with widespread criticism. Players on social media are reporting a litany of issues, including distorted textures, clipping accessories, and graphical glitches that some say degrade the original games.
“I’m sorry, but even if it’s free this is nowhere near acceptable,” one frustrated player wrote. The sentiment echoes a broader concern: modders have reportedly created superior-looking outfits in their spare time, highlighting the perceived inadequacy of the official additions.
The backlash escalated quickly, prompting lead artist Giovanni Lucca to distance himself from the problematic patch. In a statement on X/Twitter, Lucca clarified that neither he nor any original developers from Saber Interactive were involved in the patch's art direction.
But the problems extend beyond aesthetics. Players are also encountering game-breaking bugs. Reports include lost save files, audio glitches (main menu music bleeding into gameplay), and a complete inability to navigate the main menu to switch between games. Some users have even had to restart entire games to regain access to basic functions.
This isn't the first controversy surrounding the remaster. Previously, Crystal Dynamics issued a sensitivity warning regarding potentially offensive content, and publisher Aspyr apologized for the inadvertent removal of Lara Croft pin-up posters. The company’s track record has left many feeling dissatisfied.
The situation casts a shadow over the upcoming Tomb Raider: Catalyst, slated for release next year. This will be the first new mainline Tomb Raider game since Shadow of the Tomb Raider in 2018, concluding a trilogy that defined the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One generation. The timing couldn’t be worse.
The swift condemnation of the update serves as a stark reminder: even free content carries an expectation of quality. Crystal Dynamics now faces the challenge of regaining player trust before the arrival of its next installment.
