Universal pictures revives bon jovi biopic project
Universal Pictures has officially greenlit a biopic chronicling the early years of Bon Jovi, the iconic rock band responsible for anthems like "Livin’ on a Prayer" and "Wanted Dead or Alive." The studio emerged victorious from a bidding war to bring the story to the big screen, signaling a renewed interest in rock and roll history.
The film will focus on bon jovi's 1980s rise
The project will delve into the formative years of the New Jersey band, charting their ascent throughout the 1980s under the leadership of frontman Jon Bon Jovi, born John Bongiovi. The film will explore how he helped establish the band's signature sound and cemented their place in rock music.
Cody Brother, known for his screenwriting work on titles such as Drudge and Killing Satoshi, has been tapped to pen the screenplay. Producing the film are Kevin J. Walsh, whose credits include Manchester by the Sea and Napoleon, and Gotham Chopra, best known for Thank You, Goodnight: Bon Jovi Story.
Jacqueline Garell, Universal’s head of production, will oversee the film’s development, ensuring a faithful and compelling portrayal of the band’s journey. Universal’s deal reportedly includes participation from Jon Bon Jovi himself, granting access to the band’s extensive music library.
Bon Jovi burst onto the scene with their self-titled debut in 1984, releasing instant classics like "Runaway" and "Shot Through the Heart." The band continued its trajectory with 7800 Fahrenheit in 1985, followed by the breakthrough album Slippery When Wet in 1986, which catapulted them to global superstardom with hits like "Livin’ on a Prayer," "You Give Love a Bad Name," and, of course, "Wanted Dead or Alive." They remain an active force in music, with their most recent album, Forever, released in 2024.
While details regarding casting and a release date remain under wraps, the project’s greenlight signals a significant opportunity to revisit a pivotal era in rock music. The band’s enduring popularity speaks to a timeless appeal that transcends generations.
