Witcher Remake on Hold, Prioritizing Witcher 4 and Expansion

CD Projekt Red has paused development on the upcoming Witcher remake, shifting focus to the highly anticipated Witcher 4 and a new expansion for Witcher 3. Developer Fool’s Theory is currently assisting with Witcher 4 and spearheading the Songs of the Past expansion for Witcher 3, but also remains involved in the remake project.

Remake Tied to Witcher 4 Development

The decision to temporarily integrate the remake’s development with Witcher 4 stems from production dependencies. The remake is being built upon the assets and tools created for the next installment, meaning the remake team must wait untilWitcher 4 progresses further. A CDPR representative stated, “Fool’s Theory team is focused mainly on the development of Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, while a relatively small part of their team is supporting the development of The Witcher 4.”

Timeline and Future Plans

CD Projekt Red confirmed the delay in a statement to GameSpot, emphasizing the need for a robust foundation for the remake. While initially announced in 2022, the remake is now projected to arrive sometime around 2028, aligning with the planned release of Witcher 4 in 2028. The studio anticipates completing a trilogy within six years of Witcher 4’s debut, suggesting the remake could slot between the fourth and fifth games to maintain fan engagement.
