World of darkness returns: 'hunter' gets a reckoning
A shadow just fell across the Xbox landscape. During today’s Xbox Partner Preview, a surprise trailer announced Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish, a first-person action game resurrecting a belovedtabletop property and promising a visceral return to the grim realities of the World of Darkness.

A legacy of shadows and slash
The World of Darkness, a sprawling universe encompassing tabletop RPGs like Vampire: The Masquerade and Werewolf: The Apocalypse, has always thrived on its intricate lore and atmospheric dread. While primarily a tabletop phenomenon, the franchise has flirted with video game adaptations before. The most notable – and fondly remembered – was the 2002 Hunter: The Reckoning, a GameCube and Xbox title that blended hack-and-slash gameplay with four-player co-op. Our review at the time gave the original Xbox version a solid 8.7/10, a testament to its engaging action and surprisingly robust cooperative experience.
Deathwish aims to recapture that spirit, but with a modern sensibility. The newly released trailer offers a glimpse into the game's atmosphere, following a group of Hunters – mortals battling supernatural threats – as they confront a particularly dangerous vampire. The footage hints at a faster, more fluid combat system than its predecessor, alongside visual fidelity befitting the Xbox Series X|S and PC platforms.
But the appeal of Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish extends beyond nostalgia. The World of Darkness has seen a significant resurgence in recent years, fueled by the success of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 and other ambitious adaptations. Deathwish arrives as the latest entry, poised to capitalize on this renewed interest and potentially broaden the franchise's reach to a new generation of players. The game is slated for release in Summer 2027, giving players ample time to steel themselves for the coming darkness.
The Xbox Partner Preview showcased several intriguing titles, but Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish stands out as a particularly compelling addition. It’s a gamble, certainly – translating tabletop RPGs into engaging action games is a notoriously tricky proposition – but the potential payoff is immense. The success of Deathwish could very well pave the way for further adaptations of the World of Darkness, bringing its rich mythology and thrilling narratives to a wider audience. The window between now and summer 2027 is long, but the trailer’s promise of intense action and atmospheric horror has already sparked a palpable excitement among fans.
