Xbox ally gains ai boost: auto sr arrives in april
Microsoft is injecting artificial intelligence into its handheld gaming PC, the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X, with the upcoming arrival of Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) in April. The update, detailed by Windows Central, promises a significant frame rate increase while preserving visual fidelity.

Ai upscaling enhances ally x performance
Originally a feature reserved for Copilot+ PCs equipped with Snapdragon X or X2 processors, Auto SR leverages AI to render games at lower resolutions before scaling them up. A demonstration by Ethan Gach of Kotaku showcased Forza Horizon 5 achieving approximately 51 fps with Auto SR enabled, compared to 35 fps without. Microsoft claims an almost 30% frame rate boost with minimal visual compromise.
However, the technology isn't without its caveats. As reported by Tom's Hardware, the current implementation can introduce latency, and the feature is currently limited to games supporting DirectX 11 or 12. The update represents a substantial improvement for the Ally X, already considered a leading handheld PC gaming device.
The rollout of Auto SR to the lower-powered ROG Xbox Ally remains unconfirmed.
The increasing sophistication of AI upscaling demonstrates a clear trajectory: handheld gaming is rapidly closing the gap with console performance. This isn't just an upgrade; it's a paradigm shift in mobile gaming capabilities.
