Xbox Hints at Continued Support for Physical Games Amidst Industry Shift
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has offered optimistic, though non-committal, insights regarding the inclusion of a disc drive in the company's next console, codenamed Project Helix. Speaking to the BBC in August 2026, Sharma emphasized Xbox’s focus on affordability and efficiency for the next generation of hardware.
Xbox Prioritizes Choice and Affordability
Sharma acknowledged the industry-wide need for innovation in affordability and efficiency, particularly given current hardware and component challenges. She stated Xbox’s commitment to providing players with choices in how they purchase and play their games, recognizing the value of both physical and digital media. “I know players love physical media, and I know there's a lot of benefits in digital media, and I want to make sure people have a choice,” she said.

Disc-to-Digital Program and Comparison to PlayStation
Xbox is already gaining positive attention for its recently announced disc-to-digital program, which allows players to digitize their physical games into an online library. This initiative, officially unveiled at Gamescom on August 26 and rolling out to Xbox Insiders starting August 31, contrasts sharply with PlayStation’s decision to discontinue physical game disc production starting January 2028, a move that has been met with considerable criticism from gamers.
Digital Trend Extends to Major Titles
The shift towards digital distribution is also evident in the upcoming release of GTA 6, which will forgo a physical disc in favor of a digital code within a disc case, a decision defended by Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick.
