Rockstar Defends $80 GTA 6 Price, Claims ‘Vastly More Value’
Rockstar Games’ standard edition of Grand Theft Auto 6 is priced at $80, a $10 increase from previous triple-A console games. Rockstar CEO Strauss Zelnick defended this pricing strategy in an interview with IGN, asserting that the company aims to deliver ‘vastly more value’ than the cost.
Pricing Justified by Value and Exclusive Content
The Standard Edition includes the base single-player experience, while the Ultimate Edition offers exclusive content like a mission and shops. Zelnick stated the price point allows Rockstar to provide this additional value, and a ‘premium opportunity’ for those seeking it. He emphasized that pricing decisions are ‘case by case’ and won’t necessarily apply to all Take-Two games, citing the $50 price point for Mafia: The Old Country.

Inflation and Consumer Excitement
Zelnick argued that video game pricing hasn’t kept pace with inflation, and that Rockstar’s pricing for both editions is well-received. An IGN poll showed over 70% of respondents would opt for the $100 Ultimate Edition, suggesting the strategy is effective. Rockstar is also planning to release a look at GTA 6 on Netflix and is not including a physical disc with the standard edition.

Zelnick’s Final Remarks
"Our goal is not to maximize price," Zelnick concluded. "In this case, I think what we've decided to do makes a whole lot of sense in the context of what we're delivering." He added that the true cost of a AAA video game is lower than it was 20 years ago, and Rockstar aims to continue ‘over-delivering’ for consumers.
