Hayley Atwell Criticizes Peggy Carter's Death in 'Multiverse of Madness'
Hayley Atwell, the actress who portrays Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has expressed disappointment with her character's death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Speaking at the For the Love of Fantasy & Sci-Fi convention in London, Atwell stated she felt the scene was a “complete disservice to the character.”
Frustration with the Scene's Execution
Atwell revealed she attempted to suggest alternate versions of Peggy Carter's fight against Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, but her ideas were dismissed. In the film, Captain Carter, an alternate version of Peggy, wields a shield emblazoned with the Union Jack and is swiftly defeated by Wanda alongside other members of the Illuminati.
“I loved the idea that she'd be in the suit and have the shield,” Atwell explained. “And if I’m really brutally honest, I was so disappointed with how they positioned her and what happened to her in that scene. It's so small, and she gets frisbeed to death.” While the scene aimed to showcase Wanda's power and her descent, Atwell noted her character had very few lines before her abrupt demise.

Disappointment with Dialogue
A particular point of contention for Atwell was a moment where Peggy Carter quotes Steve Rogers' iconic line, “I could do this all day.” She felt the subsequent lack of a proper response – a simple “no you couldn’t” – made the character appear “lame.” “I felt that was like a bum steer and a complete disservice to the character,” she added.
Atwell is set to reprise her role in Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release on December 18th. Fans are eager to see where her character's journey will lead next, hoping for a chance to see her suited up again.
