Avatar producer rae sanchini says both films are being worked on.
Speaking to Inverse, Sanchini revealed that the team is currently figuring out the schedule, budgeting, and planning for the next two installments in the franchise.
“Right now we’re figuring out the schedule,” she said. “We’re working hard on it right now, budgeting, scheduling, planning, building out our new pipeline for them. As far as we’re concerned, we’re full speed ahead.”
This news comes after James Cameron expressed concerns about the financial viability of the sequels due to the high cost of production and the current state of the film industry.
Cameron recently stated that Avatar 3 would need to perform well at the box office, and he'd need to find a way to make Avatar 4 and 5 more inexpensively to get the greenlight from Disney.
Disney has already set release dates for Avatar 4 (December 21, 2029) and Avatar 5 (December 19, 2031), with Cameron aiming to conclude the story arc by that point.
However, at 71 years old, Cameron would be nearing 80 by the time Avatar 5 hits theaters. Sanchini noted that those release dates are “tentative,” with the schedule still to be solidified in the near future.
Despite the challenges, Sanchini remains optimistic, stating that the scripts for Avatar 4 and 5 are “brilliant” and that the team is moving forward.
