Daredevil soars: 'born again' lands with early critical acclaim
New York City is once again the battleground for Marvel's heroes, as the highly anticipated second season of Daredevil: Born Again has officially debuted on Disney+. The revival, bringing back Charlie Cox's beloved Matt Murdock after his Netflix run, is generating considerable buzz – and surprisingly positive initial reactions.
A rocky road to redemption
The road to this point hasn't been smooth. Production on the first season was plagued by reports of creative clashes, stemming from the challenge of integrating the grounded, street-level tone of the original Netflix Daredevil into the broader, and often younger-skewing, Marvel Cinematic Universe. It seems that once the studio relinquished some of that control, the series began to find its footing. Now, with Born Again, the stakes are higher than ever. New York's protectors find themselves precariously balanced, while Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio delivering a predictably compelling performance) pulls the strings from the shadows, his ambitions threatening to consume the city.
Early reviews are painting a far more optimistic picture than many initially feared. Currently, the season boasts a remarkable 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes – a significant milestone, placing it amongst the best installments in the Daredevil saga, including the acclaimed original Netflix series. It’s only surpassed by the series' first and third seasons on Netflix, showcasing a return to form for the character.
But the real testament to the season's immediate impact lies in the audience response. The premiere episode has garnered a staggering 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes – a figure that already surpasses the 93% rating achieved by the original series’ first season. While these numbers are early, and will undoubtedly fluctuate as more episodes become available, the initial reception suggests a genuine reconnection with the core elements that made Daredevil a fan favorite.
It's important to note that critics have viewed the entire season, while audiences have only sampled the first episode.
