Darkseid's dcu reign delayed: snyder's epic plan remains on shelf

Five years after its release, Zack Snyder recently offered a tantalizing glimpse into a scrapped vision for Darkseid's role in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The revelation, shared on Instagram, reignites speculation about the powerful villain’s future in the DC cinematic landscape.

Snyder's lost dceu endgame: a cosmic war

The director’s cut of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, now in its fifth anniversary, hinted at a grand confrontation between Darkseid and the pantheon of New Gods against a coalition of Earth's heroes and Atlanteans. In an interview with GQ, Snyder detailed his ambitious plan, revealing that Darkseid would have arrived on Earth, wielding the Anti-Life Equation, a force capable of controlling all will in the universe. The storyline would have culminated in a massive battle, with Wonder Woman as queen of Themyscira and Arthur Curry ruling Atlantis, uniting the world against the alien menace.

This wasn't a fleeting cameo; Snyder envisioned a sprawling narrative arc, culminating in a 20-year epilogue where Superman’s son, born without powers, would eventually become the next Batman. The final scene would have shown Lois Lane taking her son to the Batcave, a poignant passing of the torch.

However, James Gunn, the current head of DC Studios, has effectively sidelined Darkseid as the primary antagonist for the new DCU. Gunn cited the character's similarities to Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the fascinating world-building of Jack Kirby as reasons for focusing on other aspects of the DC mythos, including the New Gods.

Gunn’s approach reflects a deliberate shift away from Snyder's established plans. While Darkseid’s brief appearance in Justice League teased a larger role, the new DCU is forging its own path, exploring different corners of the DC universe. The decision to move forward without Darkseid, a character many fans anticipated, underscores a bold new direction for the franchise. The focus now rests on characters like Mister Miracle and the expansive lore of the New Gods.

The legacy of Snyder’s vision remains a point of fascination for DC fans, serving as a reminder of alternate storylines and potential futures within the vast DC Universe.
