Furious trailer unleashes explosive martial arts action

IGN exclusively unveils the first look at the red band trailer for The Furious, a high-octane action film generating significant buzz after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. The film, boasting a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, promises a brutal showdown fueled by vengeance and deadly martial arts.

The narrative centers on Wang Wei (Xie Miao), whose daughter is abducted by a criminal organization, leaving him abandoned by a corrupt police force. Driven by fury, Wei embarks on a relentless pursuit, aided by Navin (Joe Taslim), a persistent journalist grappling with the mysterious disappearance of his wife. Their unlikely alliance ignites a series of intense confrontations against the kidnappers.

Director Kenji Tanigaki detailed the challenges of crafting the film's action sequences. He identified the final police station sequence as particularly demanding, requiring 18 nights of filming with five actors representing diverse martial arts styles. Tanigaki emphasized the exceptional skill and physicality of the cast, noting that they weren't merely acting but actively fighting, seamlessly blending performance and action.

Tanigaki cited Buster Keaton's silent film Seven Chances as a major influence, praising its inventive chase sequences and enduring appeal. He also lauded Bruce Lee's iconic fight scene with Chuck Norris in The Way of the Dragon, highlighting its powerful non-verbal communication and lasting impact on the action genre.

The Furious also features Yang Enyou, Brian Le, and Joey Iwanaga. The screenplay is credited to Mak Tin Shu, Lei Zhilong, Shum Kwan Sin, and Frank Hui, with production by Bill Kong, Shan Tam, and Frank Hui. Lionsgate is slated to release The Furious in the U.S. on May 29, 2026.
