Kirsten dunst signs on to star as alex in minecraft movie 2
Hollywood star Kirsten Dunst
is joining the beloved video game franchise Minecraft in a major new role. The Spider-Man and Captain Marvel actress has signed on to play Alex, the protagonist of the blocky sandbox series, in the forthcoming sequel Minecraft Movie 2.
Plot details remain under wraps
Announced last October, Minecraft Movie 2 is still shrouded in secrecy, with Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures keeping the story, title and key details firmly under wraps as the film gears up for a July 23, 2027 release.
Dunst's casting marks a significant coup for the franchise, which has already proven its box office might with the $960 million global haul of the first Minecraft film. That movie's success, coupled with the enduring popularity of the Minecraft game itself, made a sequel all but inevitable.
Original director Jared Hess is back behind the camera, with Chris Galletta penning the script once more. The returning cast includes Jack Black as Steve, Jason Momoa as Garrett, Danielle Brooks as Dawn, Matt Berry as Nitwit, and Jennifer Coolidge as Marlene.
