He aimed to inject that distinct comic book flavor, allowing Spider-Man to face a concentrated, high-stakes challenge distinct from the broader narrative arcs.
The cancellation stemmed from the devastating 2014 Sony Pictures cyberattack, which occurred as the film was entering its full pre-production phase. A dedicated art department was operational, and Goddard described his vision as a “very distinct take on a Spider-Man movie.” He poured his passion for the character into the script, ensuring it incorporated all the elements he cherished about Spider-Man. “I just wanted to do everything I loved about Spider-Man,” he recalled.
