Spanish cinema mourns loss of gemma cuervo, 'aquí no hay quien viva' star

Known to millions for her iconic portrayal of the gossipy Vicenta Benito in the beloved television series Aquí No Hay Quien Viva, Cuervo passed away on Saturday, according to family sources.

Family sources shared the news with the Spanish news agency EFE, expressing profound sadness. A wake will be held on Sunday at the Tanatorio de La Paz in Tres Cantos, beginning at 10:00 am. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

Cuervo’s career spanned decades, beginning in theater before transitioning to film and television. She left an indelible mark on Spanish television with memorable roles in series like Estudio 1 and Médico de Familia. However, it was her role as Vicenta Benito, the perpetually nosy neighbor with her loyal dog Valentín, that cemented her place in the hearts of Spanish audiences.

Her involvement with Aquí No Hay Quien Viva lasted until 2006, and she later joined the cast of La que se avecina in 2007, playing Mari Tere Valverde until 2010. Just months before her passing, Cuervo made a recent appearance on the TVE program La Revuelta, receiving a standing ovation from the audience.

Beyond her on-screen performances, Cuervo was also a familiar voice on Radio Patio, the fictional gossip radio station she co-hosted with Marisa (Mariví Bilbao) and Concha (Emma Penella). The trio provided countless hours of entertainment for listeners.
