But this isn't a simple showdown. Homelander is actively hunting for a protovirus derived from Compound V, a substance that promises him immortality—a terrifying prospect for anyone standing in his way. The stakes, as you might imagine, are astronomically high.
Complicating matters, Stellar Luz and A-Train are actively recruiting supers to bolster the resistance against Homelander’s reign. Among their recruits are Marie Moreau and other promising students from Godolkin University, the setting for Gen V. This cross-pollination of characters has led many to believe a viewing of the spin-off is essential to grasp the nuances of the main series. But don't panic.
Kripke's stance: a 'subtle nudge,' not a requirement
Showrunner Eric Kripke, in a recent interview, emphatically pushed back against the notion that Gen V is a prerequisite for enjoying The Boys' final season. “We don’t want it to feel like homework,” Kripke stated, clarifying that the connections between the two shows should be “a subtle nudge… a wink, not an obligation.” He’s clearly wary of turning the experience into a convoluted, multi-series commitment, a path he explicitly doesn’t want The Boys to follow, a clear dig at the increasingly complex interconnectedness of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While acknowledging that he'd love for fans to experience both series, Kripke seems determined to maintain The Boys’ accessibility. Even though Marie Moreau’s backstory was significantly revealed in Gen V Season 2 – revealing her connection to Project Odessa and Homelander – expect the main series to provide sufficient context for understanding her role in the fight against the villain. The show intends, it seems, to stand on its own two feet.
The Boys' final season arrives on Prime Video on April 8, 2026. Whether that means a casual viewing experience will suffice or whether a Gen V refresher course is advisable remains to be seen. But for now, Kripke's words offer a welcome reprieve for those hesitant to tackle another series.
