Wick returns? reeves & stahelski crack john wick 5 after 'conundrum'

After a year of speculation and a notoriously ambiguous ending to John Wick: Chapter 4, the question of whether John Wick will truly meet his demise has finally found an answer: he’s coming back.

Keanu reeves and chad stahelski have ‘cracked it’ – but there’s a catch

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson has confirmed that director Chad Stahelski and star Keanu Reeves have developed a story for John Wick 5 that they’re genuinely excited about. The news, while positive, comes with a caveat: the film won't simply be a continuation of the High Table conflict. Stahelski has described the new direction as ‘really different,’ promising a narrative that marks a significant departure from previous installments.

Initially, Stahelski admitted to a ‘bit of a conundrum’ in finding a path forward after the explosive climax of Chapter 4, where Wick seemingly succumbed to his injuries. The initial plan, as revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, was to wrestle with the implications of Wick’s death, a challenge that proved surprisingly complex. ‘It’s not a continuation with the High Table,’ Stahelski stated, ‘John dealt with his grief.’

Spinoffs abound, but wick 5 takes center stage

While the focus remains firmly on John Wick 5, Lionsgate is simultaneously developing a prequel exploring John Wick’s ‘Impossible Task,’ starring Donnie Yen’s character, Caine, and a samurai-western spin-off. However, Fogelson cautioned that these projects will precede the arrival of the fifth mainline film. ‘There are a lot of steps, so I wouldn’t want to put a timeline on it,’ he explained. The sheer scale of the John Wick universe – with whispers of additional spin-offs – highlights the franchise’s enduring popularity and the demand for more Wick action.

Despite Reeves’s age – now 61 – and his admitted concerns about his physical capabilities, the studio and Stahelski believe they’ve crafted a compelling story. Reeves himself has previously expressed reservations about continuing the role, citing ‘knees saying “I can’t do another John Wick.”’ Yet, the studio’s confidence suggests this hurdle has been overcome, at least for now. Stahelski envisions a significantly altered narrative, one that will undoubtedly challenge the audience and redefine the John Wick saga. He emphasized that the trailer alone will ‘go, “Holy fk. I gotta see that.”’

The fact that John Wick: Chapter 4 grossed over $440 million worldwide – surpassing the box office performance of its predecessors – underscores the franchise’s continued relevance. But with Reeves’s potential limitations and the ambitious slate of spin-offs, the future of John Wick remains, predictably, shrouded in a healthy dose of uncertainty. For now, however, the prospect of a fifth installment, guided by Stahelski and Reeves, feels decidedly more tangible.
