X-Men Director Teases Comic Inspirations for MCU Reboot

X-Men director Jake Schreier has discussed the comic book influences behind his upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot, emphasizing a desire to revisit previously underutilized aspects of the mutant universe.

Marvel Studios Seeking ‘Untapped’ Areas of Mutant Lore

Speaking with Good Morning America following the explosive cast reveal at D23 2026, Schreier and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige are exploring corners of the mutant world that haven’t been adequately represented in recent films. Schreier, previously known for directing Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, stated the team is “digging back into those comics like 20 years, the whole Chris Claremont run, the newer Jonathan Hickman stuff.”

Key Cast Announced

The film’s May 2028 release is still nearly two years away, but key cast members have already been confirmed, including Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister. Kit Connor will portray Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, and Sadie Sink as Jean Grey.

Revering the Source Material

Schreier highlighted the importance of honoring the rich history of the X-Men comics, while also bringing a fresh perspective. “One of the great things about the comics is there is such a rich and broad history,” he said. “Let’s find the things that haven't recently been done well. All these other corners of the universe…”

Release Timeline

The X-Men film is currently slated for a May 5, 2028 release. Other MCU projects scheduled for 2028 include VisionQuest in October and Avengers: Doomsday in December.
