The lawsuit, filed earlier this week, details a harrowing incident in April where officers stormed Melendez’s home via his bedroom window, resulting in paralysis from the waist down. Initial reports indicated a false alarm – a bogus claim of an active shooter – fueled by a malicious swatting attempt.
Melendez had previously alerted police to a potential threat, specifically warning them he was being targeted by an individual attempting to orchestrate a swatting operation. He provided evidence of this targeted harassment, yet the response, tragically, escalated into a violent confrontation.
According to a 911 recording obtained by the Arizona Daily Star, Melendez recounted being told officers planned to fabricate a bomb threat, prompting a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) response, all to facilitate the swatting. He described being informed that the threat would leverage his ethnicity and potentially lead to the deportation of his entire family – all citizens – due to a fabricated incident.
The initial response from law enforcement, as captured in police video released to the public, showed officers shouting from the exterior, identifying themselves as sheriff’s deputies, before resorting to smashing the bedroom window with a shovel. The incident culminated in officers firing upon Melendez after he grabbed a legally owned shotgun in defense, following the initial breach.
Melendez, who was wearing noise-canceling headphones at the time, stated he only realized the danger when his window was shattered. He immediately rushed to protect his mother and family. Prior to the incident, Melendez’s aspirations centered on a career in automotive engineering, specifically aiming to contribute to Formula 1 teams. He expressed a deep passion for soccer and enjoyed engaging in board games and outdoor activities – a stark contrast to the life-altering trauma he now faces.
Local police have declined to offer further comment on the specifics of the investigation.
