YouTube Announces New View Count System
YouTube is introducing a new view count system that will start counting views the instant a video begins to play, rather than after a minimum watch time. This change will be implemented globally across all formats, including VOD, Shorts, and Live, starting August 24, 2026.

YouTube Announces New View Count System
Historically, YouTube used different view counting systems for various formats, leading to "metric confusion" among creators. The platform has heard their call for clarity and is standardizing views to reflect creators' true exposure. This update aligns with how YouTube's Shorts feature, introduced last year, already tracks views.
While the change aims to eliminate confusion and provide more accurate data, some creators are concerned it could devalue views and lead to inflated counts due to auto-play. YouTube assures that this change will not impact creators' earnings or eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program, as earnings are still tied to "Engaged" views.
The update has sparked debate on social media, with some creators expressing concerns and others understanding the reasoning behind the change. As one creator noted, the previous system discouraged clickbait and rewarded content that held viewers' attention. However, others see the value in having a consistent view count across platforms like Instagram and TikTok.
YouTube's full statement emphasizes that original analytics and performance metrics will continue to exist under the "Engaged views" banner. The platform aims to make it easier for creators to demonstrate their value to brand partners by providing a standardized view count system.
