Air bud legacy ends: beloved retriever dies, reboot reboots reality
The iconic Air Bud is gone, replaced by a stray golden retriever in the latest installment of the franchise. But the death of Buddy, as he’s known throughout Fernfield, isn’t a sad farewell – it’s a strategic pivot for a reboot aiming to ground the story in a surprisingly poignant reality.
A memorial and a new beginning
CinemaCon offered a first glimpse of Air Bud Returns, revealing a continuity shift that acknowledges the tragic passing of the original’s golden retriever protagonist. A statue stands in Fernfield, a solemn tribute to Buddy, basketball permanently clutched in his paws. This isn’t a simple continuation; it’s a deliberate reimagining, one that surprisingly resonates with Vince’s own family dynamics.

From nasa to fernfield: a story rooted in honesty
Stepping back, the franchise’s producer and director, Robert Vince, explained his approach. “I think that now, more story-wise, I’m always wanting to ground our stories in reality, right? I know it’s not reality, but grounded in reality.” He admits to drawing inspiration from his own family – his grandkids’ observations about their own dog’s mortality. “My grandkids, they look at our golden retriever, they go, ‘How long is Brody going to live?’ I said, ‘He’ll have a great life.’ But some day, that dog’s going to die.”

A wheelchair, a legacy, and a new star
The new narrative centers around Jacob Morgan, a young boy with a physical disability who uses a wheelchair, and his connection with a stray golden retriever he names Buddy. Jacob’s journey mirrors the original’s, inheriting a legacy of basketball and a father’s memory. The presence of Jake Morgan, Jacob’s grandfather and a former professional basketball player, adds another layer to the Fernfield Timberwolves’ dynamic. Vince emphasizes the importance of authenticity, eschewing CGI and relying on the raw talent of a real dog – a task he describes as “not easy.”
John oliver's perspective
Despite the inevitable ribbing from Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, Vince remains unfazed. “I actually find John Oliver’s humor about Air Bud kind of fun. Yeah, he’s poking fun at us and all that kind of stuff.” He acknowledges Oliver’s past critiques of the casting search, but insists that the team ultimately secured a dog perfectly suited for the role. “I didn’t want to use CGI. I wanted it to be real. And believe me, it’s not easy to do.”
January 22, 2027: a legacy continues
Air Bud Returns is slated for release on January 22, 2027. Vince concludes, “My point is, I think humor in a tasteful manner is great, and even poking fun at you is good. So John Oliver, I have no trouble with at all.” The reboot promises to honor the past while forging a new, emotionally resonant future for the beloved franchise – a future where even the greatest heroes eventually hang up their sneakers.
