State of decay 3: zombie deer gone, alpha test imminent

Six years after its initial announcement and a debut trailer that captivated survival horror fans with the promise of zombie wildlife, State of Decay 3 is finally nearing public testing. But a key element—the zombie deer—won't be making an appearance. The revelation comes from Undead Labs’ Head of Studio, Philip Holt, in a recent interview, effectively shattering a visual that had fueled considerable anticipation.

The trailer was a fleeting concept

Holt explained that the initial trailer, showcasing the now-absent zombie deer devouring a wolf, was created during a formative, almost embryonic stage of development. “There really wasn’t a game or a game team when we were working on that trailer,” he stated bluntly to Sunny Games. “It was so early. There were like four or five people. The game was in a Word document. It was really like the very beginnings of software.” Blur, the production studio responsible for the trailer’s striking visuals, rendered the scene based on early concepts—a snapshot of aspirations rather than a reflection of the game’s present state, it seems.

The decision to forgo zombie animals, while disappointing to some, appears to be a pragmatic one. As development progressed, the team concluded that incorporating such creatures presented significant design and technical hurdles that weren't feasible within the game’s scope. The shift reflects a common reality in game development: ambitious ideas, however compelling, don't always translate to viable gameplay.

Snow, camping, and a shared world future

While the zombified fauna are out, Holt indicated that other elements teased in the original trailer—specifically, the promise of snowy environments and camping mechanics—remain on the table. The alpha test, slated to begin in May, will offer players their first tangible glimpse of the game’s evolution and whether those features have survived the journey.

Adding another layer of complexity, Undead Labs has partnered with Obsidian Entertainment, the studio behind classics like Fallout: New Vegas, to develop a “shared world feature.” This technology, already showcased in Grounded, aims to create a more fluid and dynamic online co-op experience, allowing multiple players to shape and inhabit a persistent game world. The potential for emergent gameplay and collaborative storytelling in this shared environment is considerable, even without marauding zombie deer.

Undead Labs has dedicated itself entirely to State of Decay 3 since September 2024, ending content updates for its predecessor, State of Decay 2, after nearly 40 expansions over six years. The game’s prolonged development hasn’t been without controversy, with allegations of a toxic workplace and a lack of clear direction emerging in recent months. Nevertheless, with the alpha test on the horizon, the focus is firmly on delivering a compelling survival experience—one that may lack zombie wildlife, but promises a uniquely shared and evolving world.
