Arc raiders' flashpoint update: new threats, loot, and crafting overhaul
Embark Studios has unleashed Flashpoint, the latest expansion for its free-to-play co-op extraction shooter, Arc Raiders. While not the blockbuster some might have hoped for, the update introduces a fresh wave of challenges and improvements aimed at keeping players engaged in the Rust Belt’s relentless scavenging for resources. The rollout, detailed via a studio blog post, arrives tomorrow, March 31st, across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
A singular new arc: meet the vaporizer
The headline addition is the Vaporizer, a drone-like Arc wielding a laser weapon and exhibiting a penchant for group tactics. Forget the fiery onslaught of the Firefly from February's Shrouded Sky update; this new enemy represents a shift in tactical approach, demanding Raiders coordinate their movements and prioritize target acquisition. The Vaporizer’s arrival signals a continued refinement of Arc enemy design, emphasizing varied combat scenarios rather than simply escalating damage output.

Stella montis gets a haunting return
But the challenges don’t end with the Vaporizer. The dreaded Shredder, previously deemed the deadliest Arc in Arc Raiders, is resurfacing in new locations. Players familiar with the claustrophobic corridors of Stella Montis will now find this shotgun-bursting menace patrolling Blue Gate, Buried City, Spaceport, and even the Dam Battlegrounds – though its appearance in the latter location remains dependent on specific circumstances. This recirculation of established threats, rather than a constant stream of new ones, is a deliberate strategy by Embark to ensure players master existing mechanics while facing renewed danger.
High-risk, high-reward: the close scrutiny operation
Flashpoint also introduces the Close Scrutiny Arc Operation, a new map condition designed to reward daring players. This high-risk, high-reward scenario centers around the Arc Assessor, a heavily guarded unit dropping rare components. Securing these components will require skillful coordination and a healthy dose of luck – the kind that separates seasoned Raiders from the merely hopeful.
Weaponry and quality-of-life improvements
Alongside the new enemy and map condition, Flashpoint brings two new weapons to the arsenal: the Dolabra Energy Shotgun and the Canto Sub-machine gun. The High-Gain Antenna Player Project offers another avenue for earning rewards, and the update includes a suite of tweaks designed to improve the overall gameplay experience. Perhaps most significantly, the crafting system has been streamlined, promising to alleviate the frustrating wait times between Raids. The often-overlooked Scrappy companion has also received an upgrade, now capable of targeted resource gathering based on specific item feeds – a welcome addition for players seeking more control over their scavenging efforts.
Cosmetic appeal and the road ahead
For those seeking a touch of personalization, the Wasp Hunter cosmetic set is now available for $20. This bundle includes the Wasp Hunter outfit (with four color variations), an Oxygen Tank backpack, a helmet for Scrappy, a new Raider Tool, and 2400 Raider Tokens. Flashpoint represents the third of four planned expansions, following January’s Headwinds and February’s Shrouded Sky, with Riven Tides scheduled for April. While Flashpoint might not deliver the revolutionary changes some anticipated, it signals a steady, iterative approach to Arc Raiders' development – one that prioritizes refining existing systems and offering incremental improvements to the core gameplay loop.
