Crimson desert's character crisis: modders inject life into a stagnant world

The initial disappointment surrounding Crimson Desert’s stubbornly limited character creation has been met with a surprisingly robust response from the modding community. While Pearl Abyss’ open-world action RPG initially locked players into the role of Kliff – a character notoriously lacking in compelling personality – a new player-created solution is breathing fresh life into the game.

Female character creator finally arrives

Thanks to Khione95’s ‘Character Creator - Female’ mod, players can now craft bespoke female protagonists within Crimson Desert. Leveraging the in-game barber function, the mod boasts a staggering 98 face presets and 159 hair styles, offering a level of visual customization previously unavailable. A male version is slated for release soon, promising to expand the mod’s reach.

The resulting experience allows players to embody a fully customizable female character, with armor adjustments optimized for the new physique. And the ambition doesn’t stop there: future updates are planned to incorporate even more granular customization options, including diverse races like orc and goblin, alongside a complete suite of female animations. It's a testament to the dedication of modders to overcome a glaring design flaw.

Fan frustration echoes concerns about story and design

However, the mod’s arrival has reignited a long-standing debate about Crimson Desert’s fundamental issues. Initial criticisms centered around the lack of a robust story, a point echoed by Pearl Abyss CEO Heo Jin-young himself, who acknowledged the need for improved narrative development.
