The wait is over for Spanish smart home enthusiasts. Google's Gemini AI, previously confined to a limited rollout in North America, is now making its way to Spain and sixteen other countries, promising a significant upgrade to Google Home devices. But don’t expect a seamless transition just yet – early access is currently underway.
A gradual expansion, driven by user feedback
Initially launched late last year in the United States, Gemini for Home quickly expanded to Canada and Mexico. Google’s latest move brings the AI assistant to a broader international audience, supporting seven new languages including Spanish, and opening the door to a more conversational, intuitive smart home experience. The company is clearly prioritizing user feedback, evidenced by the substantial improvements rolled out since the initial release.
The shift from the standard Google Assistant to Gemini represents more than just a name change; it’s a fundamental upgrade. Latency has been slashed by a reported 40%, meaning commands like “turn on the lights” will be executed with noticeably greater speed. Perhaps even more impressively, Gemini demonstrates improved device recognition. No more confusion between a lamp and a light fixture—the AI now understands nuances like “turn off the kitchen lights,” targeting only the desired illumination, not every connected device in the kitchen.
Beyond speed and precision, Google has focused on creating more natural interactions. Setting timers and alarms is now a smoother, less interrupted process, reflecting a commitment to usability. And a dedicated suite of child-safe features is now available for families with supervised Google accounts, promising a more secure and tailored experience for younger users.
Getting started: a manual opt-in required
Despite the wider availability, accessing Gemini for Home still requires a manual step. Spanish users eager to test the new AI can initiate the process through the Google Home app: navigate to your profile picture, select “Public Preview,” and join the Public Preview program. Bear in mind: the early access version offers limited functionality, and certain advanced features are exclusively available with a Google Home Premium subscription. Compatibility is currently limited to Nest devices manufactured from 2016 onwards.
While the progress is encouraging, the rollout remains a work in progress. Google’s continued focus on iterative updates, fueled by user feedback, suggests a future where Gemini becomes an integral part of the connected home, transforming how we interact with our devices.
