Gothic remake nears launch, demands a serious system upgrade
After six long years of anticipation, the Gothic Remake is finally slated to arrive on June 6th, and the recent unveiling of its official system requirements has sparked a flurry of discussion – and a fair bit of concern – among eager fans. While the game isn't aiming for bleeding-edge graphical fidelity, the jump in specs compared to previous demo builds is significant, suggesting a serious commitment to visual quality that may require some PC upgrades.
The shocking specs shift
The revised requirements, published on Steam, reveal a considerable leap from the modest demands of earlier demos. What was once a relatively accessible title now necessitates a more robust machine, particularly regarding the GPU. The minimum GPU requirement now calls for an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon RX 480, while the recommended configuration jumps to an RTX 2070 or RX 6700 XT. This represents a substantial increase for those who experimented with the earlier, leaner demonstration versions.
But it’s not just the graphics card that’s getting a workout. The CPU requirements have also been bumped up, with both Intel and AMD options demanding more processing power. Perhaps more perplexing is the slight discrepancy in the recommended GPU listed on Steam, which mentions an RTX 3070 with only 8GB of VRAM – a configuration that doesn’t quite align with the card’s standard 12GB specification. This raises questions about the accuracy of the listed specs and whether they represent the final, definitive parameters.
Beyond the GPU and CPU, the RAM requirement has doubled to 16GB for both minimum and recommended settings, and Windows 7 or 8 users are now out of luck; Windows 10 or 11 are mandatory. The storage space needed has also increased substantially, from a mere 5GB in the demo to a hefty 60GB for the full game – an SSD is strongly recommended to ensure optimal performance.

Are these the final numbers?
The sudden jump in specifications has prompted some skepticism within the community. The appearance of a non-existent GPU configuration on Steam has fueled speculation that these requirements may not be entirely final. Development studio Alkimia Interactive, based in Barcelona, is facing intense scrutiny as the launch date draws near. THQ Nordic, the publisher, will need to clarify these points to avoid disappointing players who may have been caught off guard by the increased demands.
The Gothic Remake, alongside versions for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, promises a return to a beloved dark fantasy RPG. However, whether players will be able to experience it without a significant hardware investment remains to be seen. Only time, and a clear statement from THQ Nordic, will tell if this upgrade is truly necessary to realize the game's vision.
