Madrid's young card goes digital, revolutionizing daily life for 744,000 users

Madrid has given a much-needed boost to its Young Card, making life easier for hundreds of thousands of citizens. No more rummaging through purses or wallets, carrying a worn plastic card, or missing out on discounts because the card was left at home.

Integrating with android digital wallets

The historic regional Young Card is now fully integrated into Android's digital wallet, allowing users to carry their validated identity alongside bank cards and transport tickets – all from their mobile device.

Google Wallet was chosen as the launch platform because Android digital wallets enable grouping of credentials using secure encryption systems. Until now, Young Card users relied on showing a physical piece of plastic that the merchant would verify visually, an archaic and vulnerable method susceptible to card deterioration or even forgery.

With the new update, which will be fully operational in the coming days, the system generates a unique QR code for each user, greatly streamlining transactions. At the ticket counter of a festival or store, the user simply needs to unlock their phone, open Google Wallet, and show the screen. The scanner will instantly verify the code against the Madrid region's databases, confirming the user meets the requirements and the card is valid.
