Fortnite v-bucks price hike: epic games tightens grip on popular currency
Fortnite players brace for higher costs. Epic Games announced a significant increase in the price of V-Bucks, the in-game currency used to purchase cosmetic items and battle pass access, citing a need to “help pay the bills.” The change, effective March 19th, immediately impacts players who regularly spend money on the popular battle royale game.
V-bucks costs surge: what players need to know
The adjustments affect all V-Bucks purchase tiers. A $8.99 purchase now yields 800 V-Bucks, down from 1000. The main battle pass and OG Pass will also cost $8.99. Higher denominations see similar reductions in value – $22.99 now gets 2,400 V-Bucks (previously 2,800), and $36.99 provides 4,500 (from 5,000). The top-tier $89.99 option now offers 12,500 V-Bucks, compared to 13,500.
Perhaps more jarring is the per-V-Bucks cost. Top-ups for specific amounts are now $0.99 per 50 V-Bucks, doubling the previous rate of $0.50. This effectively means players will pay more for the same amount of currency.
This move comes amid a backdrop of significant investment and strategic shifts for Epic Games. The company has been aggressively expanding its metaverse ambitions, investing heavily in free-to-play games to bolster its PC storefront and battling regulatory challenges with Apple and Google. A recent $1.5 billion investment from Disney for an in-game Marvel experience further underscores this commitment.
While Epic Games offered no further explanation beyond the cost-of-living justification, the timing is notable. The next season of Fortnite launches on March 19th, following a highly-received trailer released just yesterday. The changes coincide with the release of new content, potentially maximizing revenue opportunities.
The battle pass itself is also undergoing a change. Instead of offering bonus V-Bucks, the battle pass will now provide the precise number needed to purchase the next one. This means players won't receive the extra V-Bucks that were part of the previous system.
The shift in V-Bucks pricing signals a broader strategy by Epic Games to monetize its wildly popular game. The implications for player spending habits and the long-term health of the Fortnite ecosystem remain to be seen.
