Kaplan details 'biggest f you moment' leading to blizzard exit
In a candid interview with Lex Fridman, Kaplan detailed how the escalating demands for revenue, particularly surrounding the Overwatch League, created an untenable situation. The game designer, a pivotal figure in the creation of both World of Warcraft and Overwatch, stated that the company's focus shifted from nurturing the game itself to chasing rapid profits.
Kaplan’s departure in August 2021, amidst the development of Overwatch 2, was precipitated by a meeting with Activision Blizzard’s then-Chief Financial Officer. He recounted being told that Overwatch needed to generate a specific revenue figure in 2020, followed by recurring revenue of redacted annually, with a threat of 1,000 layoffs if those targets weren't met. “It felt like the biggest f you moment I had in my career,” Kaplan said, describing the encounter as the breaking point.
The Overwatch League, envisioned as a city-based esports league mirroring traditional sports, became a major distraction. Kaplan admitted that the league was “overmarketed” to investors, leading to increased pressure on the Overwatch* team to deliver not only in-game content like team skins and spectator features but also to generate revenue. “There was a lot of excitement about Overwatch League, like too much so,” he explained.
