Pokémon pokopia soars to $2.2m in launch weekend, nintendo switch 2 gains momentum
Pokémon Pokopia has detonated
on the Nintendo Switch 2, pulling in 2.2 million copies during its debut weekend. The life simulation game, exclusive to Nintendo's latest console, signals a potential resurgence for the platform and a renewed interest in the beloved franchise.Early sales exceed expectations, supply constraints reported
The game shifted 1 million units within Japan alone across four days, a remarkable feat considering reports of supply limitations for physical copies in several markets. This high demand has already impacted pricing, with Amazon reportedly increasing the boxed copy price by $10 to $80.
Nintendo’s stock saw a noticeable bump following the game’s launch, reflecting investor confidence in Pokopia's success. While 2.2 million falls short of the 5 million sales of Resident Evil 4 Remake, the context is key: Pokopia is a Switch 2 exclusive, a console with just over 17 million units sold to date. That means nearly one in eight Switch 2 owners now possess a copy.
Pokopia’s initial sales already surpass those of Kirby and the Forgotten Land (1.76 million) and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (under 1 million on Switch 2). It even rivals the sales of Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which sold 3.89 million units since its launch last year, albeit on both Switch and Switch 2.
Critics have lauded Pokopia, with IGN awarding it a 9/10 and describing it as “an enjoyable building and town simulator that capitalizes on the charming personalities of its monsters.” The game offers a blend of creative freedom and collection elements that resonates with both casual and dedicated Pokémon fans.
The latest figures position Pokopia as a strong contender for Nintendo’s next evergreen title. The original Pokémon Stadium for the N64 holds the record for the best-selling Pokémon spinoff with 5.4 million copies, but combined sales of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Red and Blue are slightly higher, at 5.8 million.
The game’s success underscores Nintendo's ongoing strategy of leveraging exclusive titles to drive console adoption. Pokopia isn’t just a game; it's a catalyst for Switch 2 sales, a welcome injection of vitality into a market eager for fresh experiences.
