Amazon prime video to hike prices, rebrand ad-free tier

Amazon is poised to increase the cost of its ad-free Prime Video subscription, effective April 10, 2026, signaling a shift in its streaming strategy. The price for the ad-free tier will jump from $2.99 to $4.99 per month, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter.

The rebranded “Prime Video Ultra” will provide subscribers with 4K/UHD streaming, allowing for five concurrent streams (up from three) and up to 100 downloads – a significant increase from the previous 25. Simultaneously, the standard Prime Video plan will see download limits rise to 50 and concurrent streams to four.

This price adjustment comes as Amazon continues to invest heavily in content. Recently, the streaming giant released the Guy Ritchie series, Young Sherlock, which received a 7/10 rating from our team. While we found the series to be “harmless fun with a clever spin on ‘Napoleon of Crime’ James Moriarty,” the eight-hour season proved somewhat expansive, occasionally obscuring the central narrative.

Amazon is also developing a live-action adaptation of God of War, the initial glimpses of which have generated mixed reactions among fans. The company’s moves suggest a renewed focus on premium streaming experiences, even as it seeks to balance profitability with subscriber retention.

The company’s strategic recalibration of Prime Video pricing underscores a broader trend in the streaming industry: a move toward tiered offerings and increased costs. The question now is whether this approach will resonate with consumers accustomed to increasingly expensive Entertainment options.
