Darkseid's dcu absence: snyder's vision vs. new direction
Five years after its divisive release, Zack Snyder’s Justice League continues to spark debate, particularly regarding the fate of its most formidable villain: Darkseid. A recent Instagram post from Snyder himself reignited speculation about the New God’s planned role in the DC Extended Universe.

Snyder's lost epic: a darkseid-led dcu
The director’s cut of Justice League offered a significantly expanded vision, one where Darkseid wasn't just a fleeting cameo. In an interview with GQ, Snyder detailed a sprawling storyline where Darkseid, wielding the Anti-Life Equation, would conquer Earth, decimating the Justice League and plunging the planet into darkness. The narrative would have then catapulted forward to a future where a desperate group of heroes, including a power-less son of Superman, sought a way to alter history.
This future scenario involved a massive, planet-spanning war between Darkseid and his New God army against a coalition of Themysirans, Atlanteans, and human forces. The climax would have seen the son of Superman eventually becoming the new Batman, inheriting the mantle of protector.
However, the DCU has since charted a different course. James Gunn, the new DC Studios head, has explicitly stated that Darkseid won't be the primary antagonist for the current iteration of the universe. Gunn cited the character’s similarities to Thanos from the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a key factor in the decision.
“First of all, there’s Kirby’s whole world which he created which is totally fascinating,” Gunn stated. “It’s the New Gods in general that is to me so interesting, which we’re dealing with now with Mister Miracle. And I have the screenplay that I haven’t read yet on my shelf right now.” This suggests a focus on exploring the broader mythology surrounding the New Gods, rather than directly reviving Snyder’s ambitious plan.
Darkseid’s brief appearance in Justice League served as a tantalizing tease, but the character’s future in the DCU remains uncertain. The move to a rebooted universe under James Gunn signifies a significant shift in direction, leaving many fans to wonder about the potential of the New Gods and the legacy of Snyder's vision.
The vastness of the DC universe offers endless possibilities. But for now, Darkseid remains a shadowy figure, a potential threat lurking just beyond the horizon.
