Dewey defies reunion: 'malcolm' star turns down millions for reboot

The reunion everyone anticipated is facing a significant snag. Erik Per Sullivan, beloved as the quirky Dewey Finn in Malcolm in the Middle, has reportedly rebuffed a “bucketload of money” to reprise his role in the upcoming reboot, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair. The news, revealed by Jane Kaczmarek, who played Lois, throws a curveball into what was shaping up to be a nostalgic trip for fans.

A scholar's pursuit: dewey's priorities

While Bryan Cranston, returning as Hal, initially expressed excitement about Sullivan’s potential return, the actor’s decision appears resolute. According to Kaczmarek, Sullivan is currently immersed in studying Dickens, demonstrating a dedication to academic pursuits that evidently outweighs the allure of a lucrative television comeback. The actor, now 34, seemingly prioritizes intellectual exploration over revisiting a character he portrayed as a child.

The initial reports of Sullivan’s absence surfaced last June, citing his commitment to pursuing a master’s degree at Harvard. Cranston’s comments at the time highlighted Sullivan’s sharp intellect and his clear disinterest in returning to the acting world after a significant hiatus since 2006, when he stepped away at age 19. “He hasn’t acted since he was nine or so,” Cranston stated, emphasizing Sullivan's shift in focus. It’s a striking illustration of how personal ambition can trump even the most tempting professional opportunities.

The reboot, centering on Malcolm's return home for his parents’ 40th anniversary, will still feature the core cast: Frankie Muniz as Malcolm, Cranston as Hal, Christopher Kennedy Masterson as Francis, Justin Berfield as Reese, and Kaczmarek as Lois. Emy Coligado also returns as Piama. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark steps in to portray the grown-up Dewey, a role that will undoubtedly face scrutiny given Sullivan’s absence. The series also introduces new faces, including Anthony Timpano and Vaughan Murrae as Jamie and Kelly, the family’s youngest siblings, and Keeley Karsten and Kiana Madeira as Malcolm’s daughter and girlfriend, respectively.

Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair premieres on Hulu and Disney+ on April 10th. Whether the series can recapture the magic of the original without the unpredictable charm of Dewey remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Erik Per Sullivan has chosen a different path, one that leads far beyond the confines of television screens. He’s trading sitcoms for sonnets, and the literary world is, undoubtedly, the richer for it.
