Ffxiv lands on switch 2 – yoshida reveals mouse controls, 30fps target
Nintendo Switch 2 is getting a massive upgrade: Final Fantasy XIV. Director Naoki Yoshida confirmed the long-rumored port during Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest 2026, promising August release date. But beyond the hype, some crucial details emerged, painting a picture of a surprisingly tailored experience for the hybrid console.
Mouse support and performance: a measured approach
Initial demonstrations showcased FFXIV’s implementation of mouse controls – a welcome addition for players accustomed to PC strategies. Yoshida, however, offered a refreshingly candid assessment: "For the first part of the question about the built-in mouse controls, yes, it is supported and it is possible. And for the second part, I have not tried going into a Savage raid with the built-in mouse yet!" The QA team is diligently testing the input method, though Yoshida leaned heavily towards controller use, citing player preference for tackling the game’s notoriously demanding endgame content. He envisioned a dedicated setup – mouse and keyboard – for those pushing into the most punishing raids.

Targeting 30fps: compromises for portability
Beyond controls, Yoshida addressed performance concerns. FFXIV on Switch 2 will target 30 frames per second, acknowledging that achieving a smoother 60fps in towns, particularly with dense player populations, would be technically challenging. He acknowledged the lower frame rate, framing it as a strategic compromise: "In towns, you may see a lower frame-rate only because there are so many players rendered on screen. But we are still able to reach 30 frames per second, and stay in a stable state." The priority, he stated, was stability, a sentiment that resonated with players wary of a graphically compromised experience.
Dual-mode flexibility: gatherers and raiders
Yoshida highlighted the console’s unique dual-mode capabilities, emphasizing the benefits of handheld play. "Whereas, we can also play in handheld mode, if you’re a gatherer or crafter [in-game non-combat classes] you can take it with you and do more casual things." This accessibility, he argued, was a key design consideration, aligning with the update introducing a weekly cycle of recurring content alongside the upcoming Evercold expansion. The goal is to offer players unparalleled choice, allowing them to seamlessly transition between casual and hardcore activities. The shift to a weekly content cadence – Patch 8.0 – provides greater freedom and, crucially, player agency.
Subscription model – a layered approach
The Switch 2 version will operate on a distinct subscription model. Players won't require Nintendo Switch Online, but will need a separate FFXIV subscription – a 50% discount will be offered to existing platform subscribers. This tiered approach, coupled with the expansion’s focus on player-driven progression, represents a deliberate effort to cater to a wider audience. Shadowbringers, the latest expansion, is now fully accessible via free trial—a move designed to entice newcomers.
Optimizations in progress
Yoshida acknowledged concerns regarding performance, stating that the development team is aggressively optimizing the game for the Switch 2. "I’ve already noticed some comments on the social channels talking about the specs and how does it compare to the other more robust systems…" He assured players that maximizing performance is a top priority, a sentiment that’s likely to ease anxieties surrounding the port’s technical limitations. The final product, ultimately, will be a testament to the team’s dedication.
