Nacon's financial crisis deepens amid studio insolvencies

European video game publisher Nacon has plunged further into crisis, with four of its studios declaring insolvency in the span of just four weeks. Despite the recent launch of GreedFall: The Dying World, Nacon's financial woes have led to the studios Cyanide, Spiders, and Kylotonn being placed under judicial administration.

Nacon's struggling studios amid insolvency

Cyanide, responsible for the Styx series, has seen its studio declared insolvent, as has Spiders, the developer behind the GreedFall franchise. Kylotonn, a renowned racing game studio, is still working on Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown, but its financial struggles have also come to the fore.

Nacon's woes extend even to its subsidiaries, with Big Bad Wolf, the studio behind Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, also announcing insolvency.

The situation affects some 320 employees who rely on these studios for their livelihood. While the studios have not been shut down outright, their futures remain uncertain as the administration process unfolds.

Nacon's administrative move aims to protect assets and manage investments and budgets in a logical, orderly manner to address accumulated debt. However, it leaves the fate of employees and projects hanging in the balance.

Under judicial administration, a designated administrator takes control of the company's assets, with the option to sell them or manage them to settle outstanding debts. While not necessarily a death knell, the situation is precarious for Nacon, given the high-profile nature of the affected studios.

Nacon itself has already postponed its Nacon Connect event from March to May, in hopes of a more favorable situation, but time may be running out. The recovery path for Nacon's studios will depend on the ability of the administrators to restructure the companies and find sustainable solutions for the studios and their employees.
