Ed sheeran defends *game of thrones* cameo, points out musical precedents
Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has pushed back against the enduring criticism of his brief appearance in the popular HBO series Game of Thrones, arguing he wasn't the first musician to grace the show with a cameo. The seventh season saw Sheeran portray a musical soldier who offers aid to Arya Stark, a scene that sparked significant backlash among fans for its perceived self-promotion.

Sheeran claims he was part of a musical trend
Speaking on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, Sheeran acknowledged the negative reaction but defended his participation. “I feel like I definitely ruffled some feathers being on Game of Thrones,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “What I said [at the time] is, ‘People love that show. If anyone gets asked to be in that show, it’s an instant yes.’ I said yes. I enjoyed doing it.”
The decision to appear in the show was reportedly a gift to Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark and is a known fan of the singer. Sheeran’s cameo wasn't entirely unique, he pointed out, citing appearances by Coldplay at the Red Wedding and Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol also appearing in the episode. Chris Stapleton even had a role as a White Walker.
“I think at the time I was very omnipresent and just everywhere,” Sheeran reflected. “So, I think it was quite jarring. [But things like this] happen quite a lot in my career. I just get s* on for things.”
While the Game of Thrones universe continues to expand with upcoming spin-offs focusing on Arya Stark and Robert’s Rebellion, Sheeran’s comments offer a fresh perspective on a moment that became a lightning rod for debate. The series’ legacy, however, remains firmly etched in television history, and no amount of fan criticism can truly diminish that.
