Universal prepares bon jovi biopic, tapping into rock legacy
Universal Pictures is signaling its intent to resurrect the story of Bon Jovi, the band responsible for anthems like "Livin’ on a Prayer" and "Wanted Dead or Alive." The studio emerged victorious from a bidding war, setting the stage for a cinematic exploration of the iconic rock group's formative years.
Biopic aims to capture the band's rise in the 1980s
According to Deadline, the film will chronicle the New Jersey outfit's ascent throughout the 1980s, a period when frontman Jon Bon Jovi (born John Bongiovi) helped solidify the band's signature sound. The project boasts Cody Blowers, known for his work on "Drudge" and "Killing Satoshi," as the screenwriter.
Producing the film are Kevin J. Walsh, who has credits on "Manchester by the Sea" and "Napoleon," and Gotham Chopra, previously involved in "Thank You, Goodnight: Bon Jovi Story." Jacqueline Garell, Universal’s head of production, will oversee the biopic.
Universal’s deal reportedly includes participation from Jon Bon Jovi himself, granting access to the band's extensive musical library. While cast details and a release date remain under wraps, the film promises a deep dive into the origins of a band that defined a generation. Bon Jovi’s self-titled debut in 1984 yielded instant classics like "Runaway" and "Shot Through the Heart." The band followed with 7800 Fahrenheit in 1985, releasing "In and Out of Love." However, it was 1986's Slippery When Wet that catapulted them to superstardom with hits like "Livin’ on a Prayer" and "Wanted Dead or Alive.”
The band remains active, with their most recent album, Forever, released in 2024. The film’s development arrives as Hollywood increasingly turns its attention to biographical storytelling, particularly within the music industry. The Beatles are currently the subject of several upcoming biopics.
The story of Bon Jovi is more than just catchy tunes; it's a testament to perseverance and the enduring power of rock and roll. Their music resonated with millions, and a film exploring that journey will undoubtedly capture a new audience.
